| Insomnia is a common clinic symptom and can be seen in many diseases. Insufficient sleeping affects people's work, study and health. It can also induce many diseases such as palpitation,precordial pain with chest discomfort,dizziness,headache and apoplexy. There are many studies about insomnia, but there is still no conclusive explanation to the pathogenic factors and pathogenesis and differentiation of the syndrom is not perfect.Insomnia is also called"bumei","budemian","budewo","mubuming"in traditional Chinese medicine. Such symptoms usually appear simultaneously, and is equivalent to the insomnia syndrome as a result of depression,schizophrenia and vulvovaginitis in modern medicine. This does not include the insomnia caused by organic diseases and the side effect of drugs.There are currently three criteria for the diagnosis of insomnia, i.e. Internationa Classification of Sleep Didotders (ICSD), Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 4th edition (DSM-IV) , International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition (ICD-10). China has established its own diagnosis criteria according to international criteria and domestic conditions(CCMD - 3).Based on the experiences of other researchers and methods described in classical books, the author surveyed 102 insomnia patients according to traditional Chinese medicine symptomics and syndromics. The following tools were used in this study: SA-3000P Heart rate variability(HRV)analyzer, Pittsburgh sleep qualityindex(PSQI) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD). The syndrome of insomania and its extend of insomania are evaluated and analyzed comprehensively.
