This dissertation includes two parts . The first part shows a review about the progress of studies on IBS, Valeriana jatamansi J. and iridoids, which has 3 chapters: The first chapter shows a review about the IBS which includes the definition and mechanism of IBS,and the anti-blues treatment; The second chapter shows a review about Valeriana jatamansi J.; The third chapter shows a review about iriodoids. The second part are experiments,it has 5 chapters: The first chapter studies on the extracted term of the effective fractions of Valeriana jatamansi J.. This experiment is to optimize the technology of extracting the effective fractions from Valeriana Jatamansi J. .The valtrate in Valeriana Jatamansi J. were compared by HPLC ; and the L9(34)orthogonal experimental design was used to optimize the conditions of the ethanol extraction technology. Observed the adsorption and desorption abilities with the amount of valtrate in Valeriana Jatamansi J. on five kinds of macro absorption resins; Then observed the adsorption faction with the amount of valtrate on AB-8 resin and got the best technology term.Chapter 2 of the second part is to investigate the iridoids in rizome and root of Valeriana jatamansi J.The nomal column chromatographies were applied for the isolation and purification. The structure determinations were performed by means of physiochemical properties and NMR data analyses. Ten compounds were isolated from the ethanol soluble fraction in rizome and root of Valeriana Jatamansi J., and six were detrmined as valtrate, acevaltrate, baldrinal, homobaldrinal, deacylbaldrinal, IVHD-valtrate.The next chapter of the second part is mainly study on the influence of temperature on the stability of the contents of valtrate in Rhizoma et Radix Valeriana jatamansi J., extract of Rhizoma et Radix Valeriana jatamansi J. and valtrate in methanol. Methods:Different samples were heated at different temperature for different time by the classical constant temperature methods. The contents of valtrate in different samples were determined by HPLC to calculate the theoretical expiry date. Results: In a closed surrounding, the theoretical expiry date of Rhizoma et Radix Valeriana jatamansi J. is 100 days, the extract of Rhizoma et Radix Valeriana jatamansi J. is 34 days, valtrate in methanol is 38 days. The influence of temperature and time on the stability of the contents of valtrate is distinct. Conclusion: The stability of the contents of valtrate is different in different samples.Chapter 4 of the second part is to provide scientific basis for the utilization and development of V. jatamansi J. by setting up the quality control criteria of V. jatamansi J. Methods: The pharmacognostical methods were employed. The extract of V. jatamansi J. was examed. Moisture and ash were determined. And the bioactive constituents were analyzed by TLC and HPLC. Results: The morphological and histological characters of V .jatamansi J. were observed. Content of total ash, acid-insoluble ash, and moisture of 15 samples from different habitats and times were observed. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of valtrate, acevaltrate and baldrinal by TLC and HPLC were preformed respectively. Conclusion: The methods developed in this experiment can be used for the quality control of V. jatamansi J..
