To choose proper brackets and to complement precise position is always regarded as a priority in orthodontic treatment. Proper brackets and precise position can express the full potential of the straight-wire orthodontic appliance and lead to better treatment results and shorter treatment time. This paper discusses the feasibility of individualized straight-wire brackets and its positioning trays design and manufacturing based on digital dental model with computer-aided technology.Methods:Part 1: Found 3D information of a dental model via a 3D laser scanner and constructed a digital dental model with occlusion relationship. Virtual diagnosis set-up was applied to forecast treatment results.Part 2: Individualized straight-wire brackets were designed with engeering software based on diagnosis set-up occlusion and manufactured by using numerical-control milling machines.Part 3: Digital brackets were transferred from set-up occlusion to original malocclusion with computer-aided technology, and then indirect bonding tray were designed with engineering software and manufactured by rapid prototyping method. The solid brackets were positioned into the tray for clinical indirect bonding.Results: Digital dental model with occlusion relastionship and diagnosis set-up occlusion were successfully constructed in the computer. With the aid of engineering software and modern manufacture technology, individualized brackets and trays were designed and manufactured for clinical use.Conclusions:It is feasible to design and manufacture individualized straight-wire brackets and position bonding trays with CAD/CAM technology.
