Melilotus officinalis is herb of Leguminosae Melilotus, which is a grass plant of one or two years life. M.officinalis is welcomed greatly by the local people for its good curative effect and used clinically for a long time about inflammations, in addition M.officinalis is a superordinary green manure crop and pasturate. But the researches on its chemical constituents are not reported by now in our country. The first part reported the chemical study on Melilotus officinalis. The plant medicine was refluxed by alcohol and the extract was condensed in vacuo. After initial seperation with methods of systematic solvent. Six compounds were screened from Melilotus officinalis, by compounds silica dry column chromatography and four compounds were screened from Melilotus officinalis, by silica chromatograpy colume under normal pressure and recrystallization. Five of them were identified by physical and chemical properities and spectrum technology. Respectively they are coumarin, scopoletin, dimethylaesculetin, luteolin and 5,7,4'-trihydroxyl-6,3′-dimethoxylflavone. The other four are waiting for further identification. Moreover, the constituents of the fraction of n-BuOH were analyzed initially and two category saponins were founded on TLC. They are combinated by steroid saponin and triterpenoid saponin with several rhamnopyranosyls or glucosyls seperately. The second part of this dissertation surveyed the chemical and bioactivities on some Melilotus plants. Melilotus is a tiny genus of family of Leguminosae. There're about 20~25 species plants in Melilotus, which are distributed 6 species plants and used by pasturate in Tibet, Sichuan, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou in China. Researchs of the genus began earilier. Coumarins, flavonoids, organic acids, steroid saponin and triterpenoid saponin are major chemical and bioactive constituents of the genus.
