Metabolic Syndrome ('MS') is a new ailment name in Western medicine. It is caused by insulin resistance, which trigger a series of clinical metabolism disorder that leads to a group of metabolic disorder illnesses such as obesity, high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood glucose (diabetes) and insulin resistance, cholesterol disorder etc.In this project, the author reviewed the MS pathogenesis and symptoms by using Traditional Chinese Medicine ('TCM') theory and conducted a clinical research on MS syndrome distribution of patients in Singapore. Objective:The research analys the relationship of various TCM syndromes with MS pathogensis, age and lifestyle to explore MS pathogensis, syndrome characteristic in Singapore and the preventive actions to defer hypertension, high cholesterol and diabetes to develop into MS. The author hopes to use the findings of the small sample research to serve as a reference to understand TCM syndrome distribution in Singapore. These findings will help to enhance the MS knowledge of TCM physician, to guide clinical treatment, improve the curative rates as well as preventive actions.Methodology:With reference of the clinical epidemiology methodology, medical and clinical articles and TCM syndrome score standard (TCM syndrome table) to design the MS clinical questionair.Design and standardize the clinical questionair. Research content includes patients'general information, lifestyle, MS Western medical history, syndrome score table etc. With 102 clinical cases information of MS patients collected from clinics in Singapore, standardize the questionair, proceed to syndrome analysis. All completed questionairs will summaries in number.Result:1) Ratio of male and female patient is 1:1.68, with the age from 42 to 82. The mean of the age is 60.7 and standard deviation is 10.9 years. The highest distribution group is 45-59 years (41 %), followed by 60-74 group (37%).2) Most of the MS duration is less than 10 years, the longest is 25 years.3) Dietary is the most common trigger factors of MS (81%), followed by living stress, mood swing, over-work and work stress.4) Most of the patient has unhealthy preference in their dietary. 93% of them prefer spicy food. 5) The amount of exercise from the patient is extremely low. Syndrome of phlegm and Syndrome of deficiency of Kidney and Syndrome of liver yang hyperactivity has less than half an hour daily, each stands at 78%, 69% and 61% respectively. Exercise volumn between half to one hour, can find in Syndrome of blood stasis and Syndrome of insufficiency qi, each stands at 100% and 75% respectively.6) MS patient's sleeping hour is relatively late. Syndrome of blood stasis, Syndrome of insufficiency qi, Syndrome of deficiency in Kidney slept after midnight stands at 75%, 42% and 36% respectively.7) For TCM Syndrome distribution, Syndrome of liver yang hyperactivity and Syndrome of deficiency in Kidney are most commonly seen, stands at 45% and 21.56% respectively, followed by Syndrome of Phlegm and Syndrome of insufficiency qi, stands at 17.65% and 11.76% respectively. Syndrome of blood stasis is less common, only at 3.95%. No cases for Syndrome with heat poison and Syndrome of Fu-organ.8) In TCM syndrome scores distribution, mid scores was commonly seen in the five syndromes. Syndrome of insufficiency Qi has 100% in mid scores, followed by Syndrome in liver yang hyperactivity and Syndrome of deficiency in kidney, stands at 98% and 86% respectively, Syndrome of phlegm and Syndrome of blood stasis stands at 61% and 50% respectively. Conclusions:This research findings reflects MS patients in Singapore have the following characteristic and unique pathogensis factors:1. Syndrome of liver yang hyperactivity and Syndrome of kidney deficiency are the most common MS syndromes in Singapore.2. The characteristic of MS syndrome is related to dietary, triggering factors, sleeping hours, exercise and age. Among all, dietary is the main cause.3. There is no statistically significant difference in the sex vs age distribution.
