Objectiave To investigate the effect of atorvastatin on myocardial fibrosis and connective tissue growth factor(CTGF) in renovascular hypertensive rats. Methods Twenty-four Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups(n=8 in each group): Sham group, renal hypertension (RH) group and atorvastatin group (RH rat were gavaged with atorvastatin 50mg/Kg/d). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) was measured, collagen concentration (hydroxyproline concentration) was also detected. VanGrieson, immunohistochemistry staining(PV method) and computed morphometry were used to evaluate the total collagen volume fraction (t-CVF),CTGF expression in left ventricular tissue. Results Compared with sham group, SBP,t-CVF,Coll and CTGF expression increased significantly in RH group(P<0.01). Compared with RH group, t-CVF, collagen concentration and CTGF expression decreased in atorvastatin group(P<0.05).Conclusion Simvastatin could inhibit the development of myocardial fibrosis in renovascular hypertensive rats ,which was probably related to the decrease expression of cardiac CTGF .
