Isatis indigotica Fort. are biennial herbaceous plants belonging to the family of Cruciferae that are used as a traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of viral diseases including influenza, viral pneumonia, mumps, and hepatitis for hundreds of years in China. Isatis indigotica Fort is widely distributed and cultivated in Hebei,Beijing,Heilongjiang,Jiangsu,Gansu of China. In our phytochemical research of the roots of Isatis indigotica Fort.,17compounds have been isolated and 13 of which have been identified by modernspecrtroscopy. Among the compounds that have been identified, there are seven alkaloids:epigoitrin,3-formyl-indole,4-hydroxyindole-3-carboxaldehyde,indole-3-acetonitrile-6-O-β-D-glucopyranoside,indigotin,inderubin.three lignins:(+)-isolariciresinol,lariciresinol-4-bis-O-β-D-glucopyranoside,lariciresinol-4,4'-bis-O-β-D-Glucopyranoside. one organic acids:succinicacid. two steroids:β-sitosterol,daucosterol. The compound 4-hydroxyindole-3-carboxaldehyde was obtained from this plant for the first time. The isolated compounds and extracts of Radix were made of anti-virus in vitro screening. Our research is aimed to establish the method of fingerprint analysis of chemical constituents by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) for the quality control of the Radix Isatidis.HPLC, gradient elution was used to analyse the components of water extract from the ten batches of commodity Radix Isatidis and HPLC fingerp rint chromatogram was established. The HPLC chromatographic fingerprint of chemical constituents was established from the 10 batches of the Radix Isatidis and showed 28 characteristic common peaks,10 compounds were determined by comparison with chromatographic behaviors and UV spectra of the authentic compounds. The samples'quality was assessed by Similarity Evaluation System for Chromatographic Fingerprint of TCM (2004 A version). The convenient and high specific method can be used to identify and evaluate the quality of the Radix Isatidis.
