Postnasal drip syndrome (PNDs) is the syndrome that the secretion of postnasal channel regorges to postnasal part, laryngeal part of pharynx, or even the airway to stimulate cough sensor in the airway by nerve reflex mechanism which results in the main representation of cough. It is one of the main reasons for children's chronic cough. The common manifestations are long term cough or mucus phlegm. The cough generally occurs at the moment of getting up in the morning or lying down at night. Besides, cough occurs or deteriorates when there are strenuous exercises on the body. Patients always hawk frequently with tickling throat, foreign body sensation in the laryngeal and burning heat sensation. Meanwhile, there are also accompanied with nasal obstruction, snivel, rhinocnesmus and other symptoms. According to statistics in previous literature, PNDs'morbidity takes up 41% among chronic coughs. PNDS is not an independent disease. It does not even have a specific pathology scope. Therefore, it is hard for the respiration physicians clinically. However, doctors of ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology mainly focus on curing the pathologies in nose and throat. The fundamental reason for the cough lies in the nose instead of the lower respiratory tract. This disease could easily lead to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. This thesis has probed into the recognition and mechanism of PNDs in TCM from two different perspectives of theoretical studies and clinical research.1. Literature review:The dissertation is from three aspects. The first is to elaborate relative discussions about children's PNDs in ancient TCM literature. The second is mainly about recognitions about children's PNDs in paediatric studies in modern Chinese medicines. The third is mainly about discussions of western medicines in the disease.2. Clinical research:Objectives:Observe the clinical efficacy of skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup curing PNDs in children by Professor Xu Rongqian; probe into the locus and syndromes of PNDs in Chinese medicine cough scope; further discuss PNDs'pathogenesis, treatment rules and therapies.Methodologies:With the cross sectional study methods and taking clinical materials of 45 children's PNDs in Dongzhimen Hospital affiliated to Beijing Chinese Medicine University as evidences, this thesis observed clinical efficacy and syndromes of skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup curing PNDs in children.Result1. Skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup can obviously relieve the symptoms of expectoration, cough, rhinocnesmus, gargalesthesia in pharynx and other symptoms of PNDs. The difference before and after treatment is significant(P< 0.01).2. Skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup is mainly opt to cure the simultaneous occurrence of cold and heat in PNDsConclusion:1. PNDs is one of the main reasons for chronic cough in children;2. The clinical effect of skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup curing PNDs in children is satisfactory;3. Skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added Gypsum soup is opt to cure the simultaneous occurrence of cold and heat in PNDs;4. PNDs should take unblocking the orifices, relieving sore-throat, stopping coughing as the therapy principle.Subject Terms:Gypsum soup with skullcap, goldthread root and Cortex Phellodendri added, Clinical studies, Children's postnasal drip syndrome...
