Content:Objective:Studying the processing and mechanisms of face characteristics of normal adults(ethnic characteristics and gender characteristics). Methods:14 Chinese young adult subjects operating in two matches-not match tasks of two kinds of face images, while recording their numbers of cortical points event-related potentials (ERPs). The first task presented pairs of face stimuli, the subjects were required to determine whether the race of the second face was the same as the first one, then pressing the corresponding key. The second task was similar to the first task, but what was required to determine is whether the second face and first face had the same gender. Results:In the race task, the Chinese subjects judged faces of Chinese easier than faces of Caucasian. In the gender task, the situation was opposite. In the gender task, inconsistencies in gender of faces in the mismatching situation, a N270 was found, and in about 400ms induced a negative peak, the central maximum in the forehead. In the race task, ERP evoked much weaker, and the two tasks showed different fragmentation. Neither gender of subjects and types of tasks had the main effect, nor was an interaction between them tested. Neither race-of-face nor types of tasks had the main effect, and there was't an interaction between them. Conclusions:Gender characteristics and ethnic characteristics are based on different processing mechanisms, judging for ethnic characteristics and for the alien face are more difficult because of more experiences and learning after birth. Significance:The current study used electrophysiological methods, confirmed the hypothesis of other race effects and the corresponding hypothesis, filling the blank of studying processing in judgments of race and gender characteristics of faces at home and abroad, making the research of processing of human faces develop further, and provide good value and space for the future study of psychology and neuroscience.
