Scroll, as a mounting style, has a long history throughout the development of Chinese painting. Ever since the first Chinese painting recorded in history, scroll started to play an important roll, due to its special size and shape, unique composition, and its social-cultural function. Scroll was the mainstream mounting style for a long period of time. Its unique size and shape contributed to the birth and perfection of the presentation methods of Chinese painting. In terms of bird-and-flower painting, scroll adds variety to the methods of representing drawn subjects, so that artists were allowed to interpret the objective beauty in nature with more subjective ideas and creativity. Although scroll began to wane towards the end of the Ming Dynasty, its unique size and shape and the freedom it allowed for composition and representation greatly contributed to the innovation and development of Chinese painting. This essay reviews and analyzes this important mounting style in the history of Chinese painting.
