Zhongshi Chen's Bailu Plain is regarded as one of the most important Chinese novels of the 1990s, achieving the highest level for this art during the period. It obtained the highest award of modern long novel in china, the fourth Mao Dun literature award in April 1998. It embodies superb artistic value and deep thought, leading many scholars' research in all kinds of viewpoints. In my opinion, although the existing researches are very rich, there is still not enough from the archetypal perspective. This paper discusses and analyses the internal relations of the author's literary creation and archetypal criticism, the character archetype, imagery archetype and plot archetype, and explores the deep cultural relevance and psychological resonance with the collective unconscious of the Chinese nation. There are six chapters in this thesis:Chapter One:Introduction. It mainly introduces the artistic value of and existing research on Bailu Plain. Based on the existing research, it determines the research method and content, and elaborates the research value and significance.Chapter Two:Elaborates the internal relations of Northrop Frye's archetype criticism theory and Zhongshi Chen's creation. It mainly analyses that based on the archetype theory of Carl G.Jung's anthropology and psychology, Frye proposed literature archetype theory from literature creation. It connects the literature tracing thought when Zhongshi Chen created Bailu Plain, emphasizes modeling characters by national literature psychology structure and creation practices, and explores the interconnections between archetype theory and Zhongshi Chen's Bailu Plain.Chapter Three:From the archetype critical perspective, it analyses the characters in Bailu Plain in detail, connects the chinese traditional culture, national psychology and classical literatures, dissects seven characters who are Jiaxuan Bai, Lu San, Zilin Lu, MR Zhu, Hei Wa, Xiaowen Bai, Xiaoe Tian, which represents seven archetypes:Jiaxuan Bai who is kindhearted man archetypes; Lu san who is honesty Servant archetypes; Zilin LU who is traitor archetype; Mr Zhu who is philosopher archetype; Hei wa who is prodigalâ… "bad to good" archetype; Xiaowen Bai who is prodigalâ…¡"change the original way" archetype; Xiaoe Tian who is vamp and enchantress archetype. Chapter Four:From the archetype critical perspective, it analyses the image archetype in Bailu Plain in detail. It dissects three images white deer, face and ancestral temple. The white deer represents propitious and the true, the good and the beautiful. The face represents glory and humility, and the ancestral temple represents "renzuguizong"(the traditional practice of "ancestor worship and acknowledging one's roots and ancestors").Chapter Five:From the archetype critical perspective, it analyses the plot archetype in Bailu Plain in detail, connects the Chinese traditional culture, national psychology and classical literature, dissects the plot of "bad to good" and "good to bad". It considers the former as "regression" archetype and the latter as "betray" archetype. In the conclusion, it generally summarizes and analyses the archetype in Bailu Plain from various aspects and viewpoints, and indicates this is a creative work and novel in the research of Bailu Plain. It explores the research field, refreshes the research method, and goes into a new and deep research itself.
