After the mid-19th century, the national music camp became popular in Europe relative to the composition of traditional piano music which centers on Germany. In French, a new art style---impressionist music came into being. Debussy is one of the representatives of this new musical style. Based on music tradition, his works reveal more created originality of creational skill and aesthetic thoughts about music. These works present the development of art during that time, as well as Debussy's understanding, inheritance and creation of art. Besides a small amount of songs, orchestral music, operas, dance dramas and chamber music, Debussy crated more influential piano works. Compared with former composers, his twenty four preludes which reveal his impressionist thoughts are unique and novel, and at the same time they present a large amount of material sources.Based on the development of prelude and social background, this paper intends to study the melody, harmony, tonality, tempo and structure of Debussy's five piano preludes in the first section in order to give some suggestions. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the social background, the development of prelude and Debussy's aesthetic thoughts. The second part shows the characteristics of Debussy's piano composition through music analysis. The third part includes some suggestions on piano performance.
