Thomas Hardy, a brilliant critical realistic writer, created fourteen great novels in his life. The most famous series was called"The Novels of Character and Environment"with the background of Wessex. Thanks to the unique artistic glamour, rich cultural connotations and far-reaching influence, they gained widespread attention and praise.Throughout Hardys novels, the female images have been active in the stage center. They were really charming and different to each other, and their tragedy lives left meditation. The present researches of Hardy were often concentrated on his pessimism, the style of Wessex, and the idea of religion. Although the research of the female images scored some achievements, most of the scholars were still paying more attention to some novel or several characters, which leads a result of less systematic and comprehensive. This situation left me the creation of a certain space.This paper is on the basis of texts, and with the standard of Hardy's attitude to the female images in"The Novels of Character and Environment", in which the female image system is divided into four categories. The further analyzing is on the feature of these four categories. With the comprehensive analysis of Hardy's pessimism, personal narrative and the idea of marriage, we find that numerous factors have affected to his female idea and the female images'fate. The further systematically and comprehensively analysis of the method and artistic style in women presents the meaningful enlightenment of Hardy's works for modern women.
