In this thesis, the author gives a formalism analysis to Chinese Revolutionary Model Operas included Peking Opera Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, Harbor, The Red Lantern, Sha Jia Bang, Raid the White-Tiger Regiment, Azalea Mountain, and Modern Revolutionary Ballet Red Detachment of Women, White-Haired Girl, which are prevalent during the Culture Revolution. On the basis of scrip, the author re-writes these eight stories in chronological order, analyzes the personage, function and the narrative structure, using the morphology theory which is established by Vladimir Propp, the representative figure of Russian folklore and formalism. By comparison and conclusion, the thesis sorts out the initial situation,17 functions, and 12 core functions of Revolutionary Model Operas. And according to the difference of initial situation and functions of these stories, the author classes the Revolutionary Model Opera stories into one typical type and three subtypes. The thesis looks the Revolutionary Model Operas as a particular type of folktale and gives it a formalism research and makes efforts to avoid mechanical application, in purposes of analyzing personage types of Revolutionary Model Opera in depth, revealing the inner structure of Revolutionary Model Opera story, and refining the typical pattern of Revolutionary Model Opera story and essentially grasping its narrative and the story type.
