| Because of the drastic changes in the Chinese modern society, the gentry of Suzhou disintegrated two groups, one of which were old adherents of the past Qing Dynasty; and the other one of which actively accepted new ideas and became the new intellectuals. Along with the social role transformation, the social careers of Suzhou gentry also changed, some of which did business in order to change the life plight, and some to travel overseas for rescuing the nation, or supported children to study abroad, and became new intellectuals. Their changes made an important contribution to the revolution of 1911 and Suzhou recovery peacefully.As a conservative gentry, Lu Runxiang immersed deeply in the Confucianism for a long time, now faced the collision between the Chinese and western culture, and still made his political ideals and social ethic opinions rooted in tradition. But he also involved in founding modern enterprises, reflected his acceptance of new things selectively and the changes of Suzhou conservative gentry's features.As enlightened gentry, Zhang Yilin who kept the traditional role, dealt with daily disputes and safeguard local affairs on one hand, on the other hand, he took active participation in the new social activities, such as advocate of new literature, establishment of Lao tze army, etc., and had the good social prestige. He was an aggregation of the traditional and new intellectuals, his unique social activities after change in the late of Qing Dynasty shows special connotation. |
