The late Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China were not only a period of upheaval in modern Chinese society,but also an era of alternation between the old and the new.Under such conditions of the times,the gentry class in Chinese traditional society also experiences and perceives this change.At the same time,the rise of modern newspaper media,the opening of public opinion,the construction of a virtual and real combination of a new political space,partial to the rural gentry class,but also unwittingly involved in the new historical tide.Paying attention to current events and participating in politics became an important feature of the gentry in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.This paper mainly makes use of the Diary of Huang Bingyi,which is published recently,and takes Huang Bingyi,a gentry living in Zhejiang coastal area in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China as the starting point.This paper focuses on several influential current events in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,and tries to investigate the information channels,main contents,emphasis and cognition of Huang's current events observation.The main body of the paper is divided into five parts.The first part mainly introduces Huang Bingyi and the general introduction of the reading situation of newspapers and periodicals in the diary,so as to know the people.The second and third parts respectively select Huang's current events observation under the background of the New policies in the late Qing Dynasty.The second part discusses Huang Bingyi's observation and cognition on the establishment of schools in Taizhou before and after the abolition of the imperial examination.the third part selects Huang's observation on thechaotic phenomena of the Election of members of the Zhejiang Provincial Bureau of consultation in Taizhou under the background of preparing for constitution in the late Qing Dynasty.The fourth part discusses the implementation of smoking ban in Taizhou area observed by Huang Bingyi.The fifth part mainly study of Huang Bingyi's close attention to the activities of the Revolutionary Party during the Revolution of 1911 and the influence of Revolution on Taizhou local society under Huang's perception.Through the above thematic case studies,on the one hand,we can use the eyes of Huang Bingyi to observe the current events and politics in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,on the other hand,we can use Huang's diary to observe the perception and attitude of gentry in the face of social and political events during the period of social transformation.In the same way,we can also use the audience of the news media to observe the actual influence of the news media and the construction of public opinion in the late Qing Dynasty.With the excavation of a large number of similar historical materials in recent years and the accumulation of case studies,to a certain extent,the field of gentry research can be expanded,and the study of the political history of the late Qing Dynasty and Republic of China can be deepened at the same time.
