This thesis mainly accounts fOr the narrative poems in the. Tang Dynasty.The emphasis of the thesis is laid on the development, feature, cause of poems,and so on. So it will help to make the narrative poems in Tang Dynasty clearerin the history of literature. The thesis composes of four parts.Pall I .The formative process of the narrative poems in the Tang Dynastyis described. In the fiIfst period, it is in embryonic form. There are a fewnarrative poems, which have two tyPes. One is abbreviated historic theme, theother is atbiograPhic theme. The ari of narration has not matured, but theconsciousness of creating narrative poems begins to germinate; In the secondperiod,narrative poems are in the growing Stage. The number of poets hasmade a few breakthroughs. These poets further probe the subject matter ficreated in the first period, and open uP some subject matters,such as onecharforr's experience, lives and fights in the fronter, gods and spirits, etc.Nareative poems in the second stage are growing to maturity; In the third period,narrative poems have matured. They increase in quantity, become richer irlsubject matters, increase in types of literature, and come fOrth a set of unfadingnarrative masterpieces. Yuan and Bai are the nucleus of creation, thei1ioutstanding achievements are embodied on narrative poems describing currentaffairs in the form of Xin Yue Fu, at poems narrating romaunts, at poem5;narrating associations with friends, and other aspects, In the fourth period,,narrative poems are going dOwnhill. The writings mainly fOllow the routeopened uP by the narrative poems in the third stage, bllt it's achievemellts arenot so good as the later. By this carding, we may see that the developmentallocus of narrative poems in Tang Dynasty is an arc from lowness to highness,then from highness to lowness, different from the developmental locus of lyricwhich has two peaks.Pnd II .The edistic l'eature of narrative pomes in Tang Dynasty is analyzed.Three chief feature may be concluded in the whole. The first one is epic. The:writings of epic narrative poems can be divided into two types. One is long, theother is moderate-shot. They are aftistic works of poets in Tang Dyllasty whoare describing, proofing and remedying the historical facts by poems. The mos1fimportant value of poems is lain on the broad living visage they have reflected.The third one is novel. Due to the restriction in fOrms, novel narrative poemsare similar to fictions on certain degree. The novel feature is lain on threeaspects. one is the integrity and complexity of plots, the second is trenchancy ofcharacters, the third one is the pwticularty of depiction in environmellt. Thesecond feature is lyricism .Lyricism is the basic feature of poetry. The lyricismof narrative poems in Tang Dynasty is stronger. It is lain on two aspects. One iscontaining affection in affairs, the other is containing affection in scenery.PartIlI. The cause of narrative poems' flourisbog development in TangDynasty is explained. It is the common functions of following facts. The firstfactor is politics of the times. The vigorous and enlightened conditions of erahave inspired violent political ardour of poets. They give more attelltion topersons and affairs in social than before. And the realism in late Tang madepoets to be profOund and factual on one hand, it offers large numbers of affairson the other hand .In addition, the ramble and exile of Tang 's poets enlargetheir territory, enrich their infOrmation. Therefore the number of narrativepoems increases, subject matters expand .While the free-spoken courage ofdescribing current affairs is from their times. The second factor is thedevelopmellt of literature. Tang's poets inherit patrimony of fOrmer poetryroundly in open pose.
