Traditionally people regard metaphor as an art of rhetoric. The contemporary metaphorical theory believes that metaphor is not only an art of rhetoric but also a mode of thinking棗梪etaphorical concept, which is a way to connet different things in thinking. As a basic method in understanding the objective world, analogy is also the logical base for metaphorical thinking. In daily Life, When people find there is similarity and interrelation between different things, they wiU transter an image of one aspect into the different thing, then metaphorical thinking is created. Lacking western language and culture environment, it is a disadvantage to improve English metaphorical thinking if metaphor is only taught as an art of rhetoric. Cutting from Mid梡eriod emotions which i.e the closest to pecple, this paper aims to compare the metaphorical concepts in HAPPINESS, ANGER, LOVE and FEAR by the expression of the four feelina, and then discusses the cognitive rules for expressing the four feelings in English and Chinese. In the view of empiricism on cognition, this paper tries to find the resons of the difference and similarity in body and material experiences and culture experineces. This paper consists of four parts. The first chapter introduces the purpose and meanings of the paper, the history and present condition in metaphor study, the base and possibility for comparison. The second chapter deals with the contemporary metaphorical theory which regards metaphor as a mode of thinking instead of an art of rhetoric. The third chapter mainly compares English and Chinese metaphorical concepts in HAPPINESS, ANGER, LOVE and FEAR, and also briefly analyzes the origin of the similar and different metaphorical concepts~ The last part is the conclusion.
