Ivan Alekseevitch Bunin (1870-1953) is widely recognized as a famous Russian writer. He won Nobel Prize in 1933. But, because of some reasons, researches on him and his works were unbalanced no matter in former Soviet Union or in China. What is his writing artistry? There're different comments abroad and home. It's definitely meaningful to the further research of Bunin and his works. This paper mainly inquires into Bunin's writing artistry, esp. in his novel writing: development of the realistic writing artistry. Bunin breaks free from the conventional models, and creates typical setting in typical characters. That is to say, in his novel writing, on the two poles of the character and the setting, Bunin puts emphasis on the setting. He is not writing the setting for the creation of the character, but for the setting's own sake, even puts forth effort on writing the typical setting in the typical characters. The paper also emphasizes the artistic techniques which Bunin adopts in developing the realistic writing artistry: first, in order to get more aesthetic effects, and descriptions according to certain proportion. In some of Bunin's novels, description obtains the leading position, and the plot is the regular phenomenon which is manifested by the description. Bunin slightens the plot, and strengthens the importance of those non-plot elements. In some other novels, the plot and the description take place by turn, that is there is no leading position between them, and one is not subordinate to the other. Thus, the importance of the two aesthetic categories, plot and description, demonstrates as making the writing artistry casting off all possible limitation; the artistic details get more varied use in writing; the plot becomes less and less important in overall arrangement.Second, Bunin also adopts artistry synthesis. In his novels, Bunin synthesizes drawing, music, and figurative language which is rich in tragedy. This means of artistic expression makes Bunin's writings read as enjoying the drawings, even feeling that there is a kind of inherent poetic quality-visual sense and hearing sense, smelling sense and tactual sense mythically merge into perfect harmony. The paper also discloses the theoretical sources of his writing characteristics from Bunin's Buddhist origins. Bunin gets the edifying influence from the East philosophy, esp. the East Buddhism. In his writings, he shows the Buddhist thought of" everything is void ". Bunin emphasizes a kind of "void" ontology, which gives the protagonists a kind of irreversible tragical spirits, and demonstrates the greatness of the cosmos and the insignificance of human being. In his writings it displays as the weakening of the plot and the emphasis on the emotional atmosphere.Today we study Bunin, and in so doing we can know the 20th century Russian literature more objectively, more comprehensively, and more profoundly, and we can further understand the whole Russian nation and her history and culture.
