This thesis mainly discusses the post-positions of Suichang dialect, a Wu dialect.The post-positions in this thesis refer to what can only go before predicates in Putonghua while after predicates in Suichang dialect. Their grammatical functions are similar to the adverbials of Putonghua. Of these post-positions, the most important ones are indicates the deeper degree. has two indications: addition and surplus. when put behind the verbs, means repetition of the above action, indicates what should happen first. Based on the field researches, this study describes and analyses the semantic features of the above four post-positions and their different varieties. It also discusses the semantic and syntactic features of the preceding predicates. Moreover, it investigates how the phonetic changes (mainly the tone changes) influence the semantic features and the syntactic functions from the grammatical and pragmatic angles.Besides, this thesis describes the geographical distribution of these post-positions. Finally, it predicts their possible origins in two perspectives: the weakening of notional words and the bottom structure.
