Evolution Of The West Of The Narrative Structure And Characteristics

The narrative theory in the western literature and art theory has experienced renaissances three times, namely historical-positivism , aestheticism and the western structuralism narratology. This is not only closely related to literature concept in different periods, but also closely connected with the modes of thinking of people in different ages. Following the two previous theoretical renaissances, the appearance of narratology symbolizes third renaissance. In the renaissance, the theory criticism of the fiction turns to itself and applied the criticism method of structuralism to realize the criticism of its own functions. As a brand-new science, narratology has made great contributions to not only the practice of criticism, but also to the theory basis. This article will base its points of views upon the whole life of this new category of science to illustrate its specialty, assertions and text characteristics, in order to investigate the scopes of its nature in all aspects so as to reach the destination of understanding and improving. There are five chapters in the article.Chapter 1 mainly illustrated the basis of origination of narratology, including three aspects, which are the basis of literary practice, literature theory and criticism methology theory. The origination of narratology is closely related with fictions (esp. modern and temporary) fiction writing practice. Meanwhile, as the science for the narrative works, narratology grasped the key points of the style of fiction research and summarized the central scope of the fictional stylistical characteristics. The validity of critical scope doesn't lie in the scope whether new or old, but exists in its grasp of the nature of a specific artistic form. Structuralism narratology analyzes the text from narration that is the central scope of the analysis of the fictional style. It is clear that fictional stylistical characteristics can be grasped more, centered around narration instead of characters and plots. We may conclude that the origination of narratology is the production of the struggle of two contradictions, which are structuralism literary criticismand positivism literary criticism and it represents the request that the literary theory need to be acknowledged as a researching subject.Chapter 2 mainly illustrates the nature of structuralism narratology from mental layer. Human beings have been investigating its existence of themselves ever since the beginning of human civilization. The history of Western philosophy gave us a clearly show of its existence. The nature of philosophy in an age is men's thought. The different ways of thinking symbolize the difference among different ages in human civilization. As the method of literal criticism, structuralism is the production of the conversion of the westerners' way of thinking. Structuralism shows some characteristics of relative non-naturalism ways of thinking, which reflect the nature of modern way of thinking. So we conclude that the origination of structuralism is not only the production of the existence of Western society, but also the result of the conversion of human thoughts.Chapter 3 mainly illustrates the nature of structuralism narratology from subjective layer.
