| This essay made aesthetic analysis of the narration of the cop shows made by HongKongTelevision Broadcast Limited (TVB). A cop show is a new kind of TV drama, the Narrativestyle of cop show is conflict between crime and anti-crime within the frame of TV dramanarrative mode.This essay employs theories developed by narratology, semiology, aesthetics, culturalpoetics, arts of television and films and audio visual languages to deconstruct and analyze thecharacteristics and laws of the narration of the cop shows of TVB and to conclude the socialvalues and unique cultural connotation of Hongkong.The first chapter briefly reviewed the historical development of the cop show made byTVB. Started from1980s, TVB cop shows took short time to win audience’s attention and favorby its thrilling story, progressive narration and fancy casts,audience rating and internet trackingrate both hit high level. In1990s, the TVB cop shows reached its peak. At the same time, TVBhad its spread in mainland China and Southeast Asia. During the period of competition andspreading out, the inner structure and character took its shape.The following two chapters made study on the inner narration and its cultural message ofthe TVB cop shows. Criminal behavior, which is a very special social phenomenon, serve as thecore the narration of the show. Hence, the second chapter of the essay made analysis of thenarration from the story setting, structure, characters and visual and audio. However, no artscould develop from its own but has in-depth relationship with the society it comes from. TheTVB cop shows is sealed with Hongkong culture. With special Hongkong culture and historybackground, the TVB cop show has its unique cultural value, spirit and connotation and itsunique mode of show production.The fourth chapter make comparison of cop shows of Hongkong with its counterpartmade in mainland China. With the development of market economy, mainland china’s copshows develop some characteristics share commons with TVB ones, like the secularity, happyending, multi-themes, aesthetic entertainment, reliance on idols.However, under the political system of One country,two systems, TVB cop shows are more entertaining, relying onnarrative and conflicts and has more series and fixed kinds of characters.As the market grows and globalization develops, more countries try to have its spare in thecop show market. TVB cop show is losing its share,as over-valued horror elements, constantsame kind of characters and commercial duplication without new innovation of the show. TVBhave no other option but to make better its strengths and enter the off-line market. Basically,TVB cop shows have to reach balance between secularity and cultural connotation.Entertainment is the need of the public. |
