Fan Ye's "Book on Post-Han Dynasty" is a masterpiece of the historical biography. Previously there exist more than ten books on the history of the East-Han Dynasty. However, this book exerts unprecedentd influence as soon as it comes into being. As the time goes by, all those books gradually fall into oblivion except that of Fan Ye, which is regarded to be the standard for writing the history of the East-Han Dynasty and endorsed as the representative of the biographical literature. Taking cues from the preceding research achievements and starting from Fan Ye's establishment of his own biographical features through inheriting and developing the tradition of th excellent historical and biographical literature of the book "Historical Biography", the paper tries to apply the theory to the contemparory and modern literature to provide an aswer in terms of the writer, the reader or the nationality psychology and the text.The first section uncovers the causes and the significance of the creation of the book.The second section takes a perspective of the writer to explore the relation between Fan Ye's experiences and the book and to analyze how the writer's eventful life experiences and his distinct personality in rebellion give a meanign to the book's individuality.The third section takes a perspective of the reader or the nationality psychology to illustrate the book's theme and gist, in which the rational connotation, for in accordance with the cultural model of Confuscian Thought accumulated in the Chinese nationality psychology, becomes popular with the later generation and thus glows with brillient glory.The fourth section takes a perspective of the text to explore the writer's superb art in the lanugage and the character, pointing out the limitation of a lack of a detailed description of the character's personality development because of the writer' solo pursuit for the theme and gist, which, compared with the book "Historical Biography " has diverted itself from the proper approach to the biographical literature development.The last section states overall the features of the book's biographicla art to give an aswer to the above question. Furthermore, the paper summarizes the tradition and the thinking pattern of the excellent Chinese historical and biographical literature, pointing out the significance the book has to the modem biographical literature writing.
