This thesis discusses the similarity and difference among four related adverbs "很","极","死","坏"of modern Chinese. Grammaticalization theory is also used to give arudimental diachronic explanatory. There are five more parts in the thesis besides the introduction. Focused on beinga full and accurate description of the distribution of these four easily entangled adverbs, this thesis uses comparative method to show their subtle similarity and difference andtry to explain them from a diachronic view, wishing to be useful reference for thosewho take Chinese as a second language. In the introduction, the author looks back the production and problems still existedin this field and points out that for those who take Chinese as a second language thedescription existed is not full and accurate enough, showing the importance toconstitute a full-ranged comparison. The source of examples in this thesis and thethought in writing this thesis are also shown in this part.Part one gives a rounded distribution of these four adverbs in modern Chinese forthose who take Chinese as a second language and pays a lot of attention to the placewhere they can occur, the constraint when they coincide with verbs and adjectives(especially the grammatical role they can play in a sentence, the restriction on syllableand semantic characteristic of related verbs and adjectives).Part two takes a comparative view on the similarity and difference among thesefour related adverbs respectively and argues that the heterogeneity of their semantictraits and grammaticalized level results in them.Part three is a conclusion of the aforementioned comparison in three parts andargues that it is the different start point of their grammaticalization that give in to theirsimilarity and difference in modern Chinese.Part four studies some grammaticalization evolvement related to these four adverbs, including the difference between the adverbs used in ancient Chinese and those inmodern Chinese, the grammaticalization start point and level of"V死O", "很"and"坏",thus deepen the study from a diachronic perspective..
