Since the creation of A Journey to the West in Ming Dynasty, the academia hasn't been able to decide what its exact subject is, and there is no certain explanation on why Wu Cheng'en composed the novel till the present day of the twenty-first century.Based on scanning kinds of the past different definitions on the novel, this thesis put forward a new explanation after getting through the whole text. From my point of view, the novel, which seems to be used for recreation, is actually a memorial to the throne ofpaiyou style. It inherited the national tradition in which the ancient paiyou dwarfs allegorized the highest monarchical power by ridiculous and humorous language. That is to say, the novel written by a way of fantasy, was used to remonstrate about that the contemporary throne ought to put the talented persons in important positions, and not specially trust the Taoists. Only that can the realm be preserved and the imperial power be solidified. Therefore, the subject of A Journey to the West is to depreciate the Taoism, sneer at the Buddhism, and advocate the Confucianism. The novel disclosed the Taoists' bewitchment and the monks' self-concern and counterfeit mercy, and also revealed the emperor's fatuity, which brought about the domination of the wicked and was worthy of avoidance by the descendants.
