Northern Buddhism (It is also called Mahayana) has prospered in many districts and countries in Asia. Mahayana Precepts are credited to one of the tripitaka (a Sanskrit word meaning three treasures) and forms the basis of Buddhism. Holding these precepts is of extreme importance in Sanga. The development of Buddhism attached great importance to the perfection of discipline.The object of this article is to study precepts set by Budda and to analyze the development of these Buddhist precepts, including their basic theory and to explain their methods of cultivation. Then the article illustrates Buddhist precepts and the important role they play in regulating people's conduct over five areas, viz. the cultivation of Buddhism, prosperity and decline in life, morality, wordly society and modern science. I think that Mahayama Precepts are adaptable to modern society. The interpretation of these precepts in a modern way and their propagation can enable modern people to have a sufficient understanding of Buddhism...
