This thesis is intended to give a contrastive study oftwo milestone representatives in respective poetic transitional periods respectively in China and the West: Wang Guowei andT.S. Eliot.Wang Guowei's "Oblivion of oneself and T.S. Eliot's "Impersonal Theory" are both of vital significance in historic Iterature and of fairly important comparability. This thesis focuses on how both poets coincidentally negate a direct poetic selfexpression in their artistic creation; how they pursue a philosophical and allegorical approach of poetic expression; how they address an objective artistic revelation; and how they both at their late phase of literal studies pay special attention to popular literature. The thesis compares and contrasts the rise of their theories, the development, the related cultural background, the impact, and the merits and demerits. This research hopes to draw inferences of similar principles and guidelines in literary development both in China and the West, so that it may help the modernization process of China's literary studies and creation.
