This story has been devising and prospering by commons and literators for over 800 years, and it is the crystal of folk literature, bookmen's literature, popular literature. The story has been a brilliant pearl in our classics. The literary writings of the story involve in novel, drama and saying and singing literature. In the developing way of the story, lufeng tawer by FangChengPei is the most important writing, which the latter writings don't transcend it Therefore, we must study the LetFeng tower in order to research the white snake story better. The thesis divided into four chapters. The first chapter discussed that the white snake story inherited and developed past snake god myths and snake sprite tales in the four respects of the white snake's figure, character, plot, love of man and snake. The white snake story reflects cultural psychology of our ancient nation. This can prove that the white snake story isn't from foreign nations, but roots deeply in cultural tradition of our country. The second chapter analyzed the white snake's variation and cause in Fang's writing. The white snake in Fang's writing is the symbol of love and beauty and ideal The white snake has been richening by local folklore of the Wu and Yue regions. It has been gestated by Wu and Yue culture and is finally formed by liberation thoughts in the middle of Qing dynasty. The third chapter analyzed tragic reasons of the white snake. The white snake's tragedy is caused by feudal Confucianism durance, little townsman's character defects and self ethical consciousness. The Fang's writing revealed the tragic complexity and deep by rational thought, and exceeded the pattern of man and sprite's love in LiaoGhaiGhliq. The fourth chapter discussed esthetic value in the Fang's writing. The esthetic value lies in affirming human desire with realistic complexity. In other words, it is affirmation of contradiction. Fatalistic artistic structure contains abundant content. Transigent ending is the common pattern of classic tragedy in China. The ending can cater to audience's taste. At the same time, it can also embody the writer's conflictive mind of struggle and evasion.
