Euphemism is more a social-linguistic phenomenon than a linguistic one, it esulted together from both psychological and pragmatic factors. Euphemism displays social cultures, generality and specificity of social development and a reflection of relationship between the societies and their cultures as well. Taboo words are the basic cause to invite euphemism. Apart from those such as gods , spirits and death under taboo, what is kept under taboo is good luck that ordinary people wish for, and a reflection of the strictly social status. As for taboo words to express sex and body-organs, euphemism is also a means for people to conceal anything improper or indecent from expressing directly in addition to its better-known principle, concealing principle, which is more frequent used by strategic politicians. The author also proposes that, besides the politeness principle, there is still one more important principle at work in interpersonal communication, namely the defensive principle.
