The Left Wing Urban Novels were novels in the background of the urban life produced by left wing writers living in the urban areas from the end of 1920's to the middle of 1930's, which include the "Revolution plus Love Novels" by dingling and hu yeping and Jiang guangci and the "Citizen's Novel" represented by zhang tianyi and "Social Analysis Novel" represented by maodun. These novels have no high value in literature and even bring some side effects on the later literature production because of their strong political hues though they may have strong influences on the society at that time. Therefore, it is good for the development of present urban literature as well as drawing conclusions in the literary history to conclude the production of that left wing urban novel. This thesis comprises four parts. The first part mainly discusses the reasons of the origin of so-called "Revolution and Love Novel" and how to deduce the urban life. This kind of novels simplifies the urban life into two antagonistic extremes and exploits the urban life as a means of realizing the authors' themes while the real cities are ignored. On the other hand, these novels have some negative effects on the production of literature after the founding of new China because of their inclination of fonnulation caused by the same or similar production thinking and narrative methods. The second part is mainly dealing with the Citizen's NoveJ by Zhang tianyi. Starting with "altering our national characters" .Zhang's novels havecertain profundity in thought by exploring the "face-saving" and "slavish" among the citizens. Seldom fettered by the left wing literature, Zhang's novel bring some fresh air to the left wing literary world. But because of his narrow viewing field and lack of understanding of the modem cities as awhole, the citizen field and lack of understanding of the modem cities as a whole, the citizen society which he depicts has more traditional colors instead of modern flavors. What's more, by criticizing the inferior parts of the citizen society, the novels only expose the one aspect of the citizen's and thus lacking the reflection of the abundance and versatility of urban life. The third part argues about the novel "the Midnight" by Maodun. The novel unfolds a picture of an abundant urban life which has been filtered by the author's rational knowledge owing to his strong sense of ideology. Maoduh pays more attention to the evil part of the urban life through dividing the life and characters into antagonistic extremes in the novel, which lacks a profound thinking of the urban life. That is why his novel casts a shadow on the literary production after 1949The fourth part compares the "left wing novels" with the "Hai school novel" and "Jing school novel ".We may discover that the "left wing novels" is inferior to the latter two novel schools both in the artistic techniques of expression and the exploration of urban culture and urban humanity by comparison. Nevertheless, The two literary schools wither away in the later years because they don't comply with the mainstream of literary production at that time. The thesis summarizes the article by forwarding the following arguments: the"Left Wing urban Novels "are reflections on the development of the urban areas in the 1930's, which are influenced by the idea of "serving for politics "and thus having intense hue of political utilitarianism. This characteristic has led to the inclination that lays stress on politics while ignoring the artistic expression. With regard to their urban life description, they simplify it and show a tendency of going to antagonistic extremes, which wants of a profound implication of the urban culture. Therefore, the deficiencies in the production of the "left wing urban novels" and itsnegative effects on the later urban literature inform us that the development of literature is likely to be fettered and hindered when it over-clings to politics.
