The trend of thoughts of popularization of visual arts starting the "May Fourth Movement " is an important theoretical proposition and historical phenomenon, though its research has not been thoroughly done or been done too briefly. This thesis intends to make a dynamic observation and a structural analysis of the trend, to demonstrate its various characteristics in the three stages-the period of "May Fourth Movement", the early 1930's, and the Yan'an Era, thus to revivify its historical contexts and internal causes. The results of my study show that centered on "to make the populace be artistic", the logic route of the art popularization aimed to awake the people, to improve their personality through art cognition, to match the extension of democratism of the time; the left-wing art ideology starting the 1930's directed the original general ideal of art popularization to "Proletarian Art ", which also means its sharp attributes of class degradation which shaped its specific forms; as a coherent factor of the "art popularization", the "visual art popularization" in the Yan'an Era emphasized reconstructing the ideology of the artists, therefore completed the final transition from the "art reform" of the "May Fourth Movement" period to the "reform art", formed the new ideology of literature and art, and realized the integrity of artists and audiences in "the art popularization".
