As an important part of American society, the Chinese Community has experienced great difficulties in the American history. In the second half of the 20th century, Multiculturalism became popular in the United States, with the rising of Civil Right Movement and the proceeding of social reform, which produced board and deep influence on the fields of politics, economics and culture. The rising of multiculture has become an important character of the development of American society. The Chinese Community has deeply involved in this onrush of multiculture movement and has grown rapidly with the suitable situation. With its wide influence, the Chinese Community has been gradually accepted by the American mainstream society. At the same time, the mainstream society has realized the importance of the Chinese Community and adjusted its attitude and policy to it. The two parties are now acting on each other. Using multiculture as researching background, this dissertation studies the transformation of the American Chinese Community after 1965 from the economical, political and cultural psychological aspects. The conclusion of the dissertation is that Chinese Americans are getting more and more impaction on the Americans and the American mainstream society becomes more tolerable and acceptable to the Chinese Community, thus the development of minor people in the new multicultural era. This dissertation is divided into five parts in addition to preface. In the preface, I start with the explanation why I choose multiculture as the way to study the Chinese Community, and then make out the term "Chinese Community "and "the Chinese" of my studying object and explain why I use the year of 1965 as the upper limit in my study. In part one I analyze the reason why the Chinese Community has changed greatly. One of the factors is the environment of multiculture in American society. Secondly, since the enactment of the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act, a larger number of Chinese immigrants have come into the US. As a result of this new immigrant tide, great changes have taken place in the population structure of the Chinese Community, which made a solid foundation for the changes of Chinese Community. Finally, the Chinese Community has shown clearly its own characters and looked for its proper position in American society. All of these factors led to radical changes in the American Chinese Community. The second, third and forth chapters are devoted to making research in the transformation of Chinese Community and the interactions between Chinese Community and the American mainstream society from the economical, political and cultural psychology perspectives. It is by the multicultural background that that Chinese Community makes great progress and achievements. This progress also helps American mainstream society accept the Chinese Community. And this acceptance also improves greatly the Chinese Community in all aspects. In the cultural psychology aspect the transformation of ne Chinese Community is more complicated. The Chinese Community is mostly positive to accommodate and mix into American culture. On the other hand, the Chinese Community has kept Chinese traditional culture to a certain extent. The fifth chapter is the conclusion. On the basis of the above chapters, the dissertation concludes the transformation of contemporary American Chinese Community from the perspective of multiculture. Firstly, the era of multiculture propels the transformation of the Chinese Community, gives it the meaning and value of existence and wakes it in the difference and sets up its own distinctive symbol. Secondly, the success of the Chinese Community undoubtedly offers a pattern, which interacts between the ethnic communities and the mainstream. Lastly, the era of American multiculture is still on its way, there is still deficiency in it. But the multiculture theory not only develops the self-esteem and self-confidence of various American ethnic communities, but also contributes the prosperity of American multiculture.
