The paper is intended to apply double-object theory to improve the teaching concepts on the basis of the present non-English-major postgraduates teaching situation by analyzing the positioning and functions of teaching and learning in multi-media context. A web-based self-access English learning system at DUT is designed and constructed.To begin with, the teaching theory of self-access English learning is analyzed and discussed. Second, different viewpoints about teaching subjects and objects are elaborated, including humanism, cognitive psychology, constructivism and acquisition theory. The author believes that English teaching should follow double-subject theory, the theoretical basis of web-based self-access English learning system.Based on the double-subject theory, the paper focuses on the construction of the ideal self-access English learning environment. Starting from the implication of self-access English learning environment, the relationship between self-access learning and environment, including the relationship between English learning environment and English learning, between environment and teaching subject, between environment and teaching object. On the basis of the relationship between every factor and environment, the construction of double-subject environment is explored, the comparison between traditional learning environment and web-based self-access English learning environment is made, the functions of teachers and students in the web-based self-access learning model are expounded, thus highlighting the teacher's role in designing, planning, directing and counseling. The author emphasizes the transfer from classroom teaching to the after-class learning, from on-the- stage instructing to off-the-stage counseling, from injecting knowledge to designing teaching tasks, from language teaching to the combination of language and education.Guided by the double-subject theory, aimed by self-access learning environment and based on the current teaching situation of DUT, the web-based self-access English learning system is designed, which consists of student sub-system, teacher sub-system and manager sub-system. In addition, review is made on the preliminary practice, reflecting the individualization of teaching and learning. Results demonstrate that the system presents great advantages over the traditional learning environment. The system is not only conducive to the reform of postgraduate English teaching, but also provides assistance and ideal platform for English teaching reforms home and abroad at every level.
