This thesis is a report of an empirical study on the cultivation of learner autonomy in the self-access learning center. The research question is that whether or not learning strategy instruction will enhance the students'ability to learn independently and improve their English proficiency. The findings of the study reveal that learner training based on learner contract has significant and positive effect on leaner autonomy. Compared with the control class, the experiment class performed better in learner autonomy, the use of meta-cognitive strategies to regulate learning process as well as English test. The study confirms the results of the previous theoretical and empirical studies, further discusses how to take advantage of learning resources in the self-access center to cultivate learner autonomy and emphasizes that college English teachers should attach importance to the improvement of students'independent learning ability and instruction of learning strategies, thus enhancing learning efficiency promoting English teaching and innovation in the institutions of higher learning and eventually achieving the goal of shifting from teacher-centered teaching to student-centered learning.
