The Dream Shadow of Red Chamber is a novel written by Gu Taiqing on her later years, a famous female poet in Qing Dynasty. It is one of many continuations of Dream of Red Chamber, and also the first novel published by female writer so far. It appeared in the later period of continuations upsurge of Dream of Red Chamber, and hold many features in narration and linguistic style different from the other continuations. It reflects social politics, economic culture and folk custom at that time. It also opened a new field of study on Dream of Red Chamber, owning special referential value about Gu Taiqing's later psychology and noble life in later Qing Dynasty feudal society.This text contains four chapters. The first chapter introduces the writer of The Dream Shadow of Red Chamber, and on the base of verifying, states her life experience and the background of creating The Dream Shadow of Red Chamber. The second chapter analyzes the subject comparing with Dream ofRed Chamber. Combining the plot and characteristics, it also analyzes the Jia family's reviviscence and trace of love and marriages among Baoyu, Daiyu and Baochai, and draws a conclusion that The Dream Shadow of Red Chamber shows some kind of nihilism which is identical to the Dream of Red Chamber and brings some examples to improve. The third chapter analyzes the linguistic style, descriptions about surroundings and folk custom. The words are graceful succinct and precise, owning Beijing dialect feature similar to Dream of Red Chamber. As a female poet and painter, Gu Taiqing descript surroundings quite vivid and emotional. The descriptions about noble family's life and traditional feature are fine and smooth, full of dense life flavor. The four chapter on the base of thorough analyses, points out that this continuation owns both Manchu flavor and Beijing feature, contributing to later Qing Dynasty study, Dream of Red Chamber study and Manchu literature study.In short, The Dream Shadow of Red Chamber is valuable in ideological and artistry. On the base of grasping the theme properly and deeper study, people should make a relative fair comment about this novel, and excavate deeper its value.
