| The Image of City in Literature, Pake who was a litterateur indicated that Urban Literature has three types of existence, including Urban Literature in broad sense opposing to Country Literature, Urban Literature describing urban and animadverting urban sin, and Urban Literature describing deep-seated cultural psychology and subconscious. This dissertation intends to review the reasons and their development for traditional heritage and rupture in the modern urban literature of China, which bases on the creative transformation of tradition of Chinese literature. And it also reviews literature of saga, which is called new saga, to study the problems of traditional heritage and occidental modernism, citing the evolvement of new realism's acceptance in China as a proof. The dissertation is composed of four parts: the return of new realism, the transformation of new realism, the extension of new saga, and modern saga.New realism came from combination of several types of thoughts, such as occidental critical realism, naturalism, and etc. And when considering authors' inditement experiences and aesthetic judgments, Mao Dun brought modern literature forward on the base of combination of Shanghai, the abnormal development of a modern urban, and new realism. His representative work, SHI, is looked as the beginning of Chinese modern urban literature, while MIDNIGHT achieved a high praise that it's the first mountain of Chinese modern urban literature. And Fan Fan and Chi Li achieved his literature opinions after several decades.As a literary form, Saga boomed and flourished in the unstable borderland between legend and fact, and was popular upon citizens by its narrative style. Under this force, new realism novel came out with saga orientation in 1990s, the folk form within intelligentsia's writing was declining with each passing day, particularly in today's society that is fulfilled with materialization, consumptivation and popularization. From the middle age of 1990s to this day, new realism novels are declined upon saga. The spirit of humanity of intelligentsia and their work's folk side is deteriorating under the impact of eyes-economic. From formalistic research of avant-garde to failure of new historic novel, most of authors considered that what suiting both refined and popular tastes was the old fashion. When a aesthetic bam is brought out to meet the masses' needs, we could get a huge income and catch up with the modernization.As a novel form and a method of inditement, New saga is popular with the public. With unique personal experiences and personal philosophy added into the novels of Zhang Ai-ling, legend changed into new saga because of particular attention to social life and personality. Thereon, Ms. Zhang's work became the representative of Chinese modern urban literature in 1940s. But with the quick vicissitude of Chinese society, new saga also passed away. Just at the end of last century, Wang An-yi mourned for Ms. Zhang's arduous work and super excellent contribution by a novel which named as song of lasting hate. And loving knot of Shanghai reminiscence served as a tool of the ideological transformation unconsciously.Saga reappeared peculiar wishes of a group, particularly those who are not expressed abstemiously in the society. Today, society changes more and more quickly, and social contradiction becomes more complicatedly, and modern saga indicates that Chinese elite of intelligentsia gets into a kind of inexpressible puzzlement and maze, after cross-conflicting among post-revolution, post-colonization and post-modernization. Therefore, dreams for simple life and self-indulger of bodies and sex became a unique form of revel for self-exiling and decadence.
