Zhao Shuli was a distinctive Chinese writer in twentieth century. He was born the body of bottom layer and connected close together with common people, especially peasants, through out his life. Being enlightened by new knowledge earlier, Zhao Shuli dedicated his whole life to seeking for a literary road of enlightening Chinese peasants by the language and the way of narrating which peasants love to see and hear. So the attempts and practices for literary enlightenment presented by Zhao Shuli have the consultative value for today's study of any period of Chinese literature.The article tries to investigate the works and deeds of Zhao Shuli from the visual angle of literary enlightenment.At the beginning, the article explores the courses and process for which Zhao Shuli changed from one who was enlightened to the one who was engaged in enlightening and shows the condition of peasants, who are the objective of enlightening.Secondly, it analyzes the fulfillment of Zhao Shuli's literary enlightenment. Devoting himself to peasant enlightenment, Zhao Shuli considered fully the possible extent of both the form and the content that peasants could accept. So he conveyed the notion of thinking, culture and politics by the vernacular speech that is easy enough for peasants to understand. All of these embody Zhao' pragmatic spirits, but what makes him keeping the fields of enlightenment is his personality and moral character.Lastly, the article generalizes the significance of Zhao's literary enlightenment. The main point is that , being contrary to the flaw of "May fourth" new literature's isolation from masses, Zhao Shuli's novel permeated into peasant groups and entered the cultural market in rural area. At the same time, he created a practical pattern of "peasant enlightenment" which are devoted to literature's popularization greatly.
