The Zuo Commentary is the first -complete historical work, which is a great contribution to the development of historical works. Also, The Zuo Commentary is acclaimed to be the cornerstone of Chinese classical literature. It has been of great literature value. One of the most important standards of a literature of great value is the portray of many typical characters. The number of characters in The Zuo Commentary is more than three thousands including emperors, dukes, princes, ministers, businessmen, and house slaves. Those characters are characterized vividly. Studies on those characters are many. The paper only focuses on home officials that are seldom studied in order to explore the theoretical and anesthetic values of the characters of home officials. The character of a home official appears everywhere in the book. According to the classification made by Sun Luyi in his work The Zuo Commentary and Chinese classical novels, a home official is the type of "flashing character". Characterization of those home officials is not elaborated but it makes great impression on a reader and reflects the author's views about what to love and what to hate. The paper is just intended to explore the living condition, mental outlook, values and behavior principles of home officials under the rigid social estate system and the contradiction of complex social relations in the Spring and Autumn Period. As a representative work of historical literature, The Zuo Commentary embodies values and views about what to love and hate, which is reflected in the description of concrete events. The overview of The Zuo Commentary shows that the description of home officials is the main carrier of the author's thought and aesthetic values. The ways of characterization in the book are adopted by the following works. The great work, Records of the historian, receives great influence from the ways of characterization in The Zuo Commentary.
