Homeward Bound: The Soul, Wandering In The Rural And Urban Areas

This is a study about the characterization pattern in Jia Pingwa's novel. Took region and spirit course as point of penetration, we talked about the life cycles of the personage image. And its way of displaying is the cycles of "leave-come back-leave again". The pattern is the unification of form and content and the form having implication. It not only showed the life floating between city and the country, but also suggested the writer's thought about society, times and life.The first chapter is the explaining of this pattern by analyzing the texts. And the pattern has two aspects. The first section is about the surface one, just the cycles of "leave-come back-leave again". It can be divided into "leave-come back", "come back or arrive-leave" and "leave-come back-leave again" according to personage image's life route. The second section is about the deep one. It is a structure of vigorous helix which approach to a circle. And the centre of this structure is their hometown. Their or distant or be close to relate to hometown may form into multiple emotion and philosophic theory.The second chapter is the connotation of the pattern according to the writer's life, emotion and its appearance in the texts. The first section talked about his life and emotion. It can help us understand the pattern and the writer's lingering of identity between peasant and city people. The second section arranged the writer's emotion from realizing to despairing towards the home, especially showed the difficult process of seeking in the 1990s. The third section talked about the writer's multiple thought of human nature with analyzing its displaying in the texts.The last part arranged farmer's moving from the country to the city, and showed the writer's thought about social development and its enlightenment to us.
