The article is divided three chapters, which inquire into symbol in literature through three directions.The produce and essential intention of symbol is studied from ontology in chapter one. From the relation between person and the world, the integration of person and the world is objective fundament that produce symbol. From thought ways, the nature of symbol implies imperceptibility in tangible, implies generality in personality. From expressed ways, symbol is a kind of indirect language means that could stimulate imagination and emotional experience through metaphor and prompting of images.The author mainly explores esthetic implication of symbol in the direction of aesthetics in chapter two. The appearance of unfamiliarity and simplification in symbol creation and philosophic tendency partly bring about esthetic extend art tension and profound meaning. The obscure and distinct contradiction, which exists in esthetic appreciation of symbolism works, can provide important enlighten about the creation of symbol and consciously demand us find both combination.In chapter three, the author studies the explanation of literary symbol in the direction of critical appreciation. Due to unclear meanings in literary works of symbol, the relation between images and meanings is not explicitand single. Every symbol has all kinds of meanings. As a result, unitary explanation about symbol is not scientific. But it does not imply that interpret to symbol is at readers' ease. In fact, it has regulations to find. Now, author analyzed the directions of symbol, and puts forward three basic rules, the principle of cultural meeting of mind, entirety and experience.
