This thesis is to study Cavaradossi, the leading tenor in Puccini's opera Tosca, from different aspects such as themes, background times, and musical characteristics, so as to explore how Puccini created this important character successfully.Putting aside the times in which Cavaradossi was living, music and drama, singing and music accompaniment get along with each other so harmoniously that a complicated figure, combining the image of a lover with that of a hero, has been wonderfully portrayed. By using comparison and analysis, we can form a clearer picture of varieties of Cavaradossi's living artistic soul. Firstly, study the opera full score and different singing editions in order to know better how the hero, with sophisticated psychology, displays his artistic emotions and adopts appropriate singing methods while on different occasions and meeting with different people. Secondly, inquire into the application of singing skills to particular music works and to particular characters in opera. Thirdly, expound how different singing methods and skillful singing treatment may affect the creation of the same figure on the same dramatic scene. It seems that only by shedding light on Cavaradossi, rather than Puccini's other characters, can we see more and better about the author's own personal life. Is it possible then to discover Puccini's attitudes towards art, love, life even politics and friendship after doing so? Nevertheless, the writer of this thesis is always making every effort to search for the nature of the realistic Italian opera of the late 19th century and the early 20th century, and the development of vocal music reflected by this century-personage.
