Chinese people have known "Circle" at the beginning of human's history. With the curiosity and worship of the unknown world, Chinese ancient people entered the time of exploration and formed the primary consciousness of "Circle". Thus, the consciousness of "the Beauty of Circle" is gradually infiltrated into Chinese people's thinking structures and spiritual fields, and it has imperceptible influence on people's ways of thinking and actions. It has become an important part of Chinese cultural psychological deposit.Until now, "Circle" remains to be an important academic problem. It has very close relations to Chinese traditional thinking-mode, outlook on the world and life, etc. Also, it reveals the movable forms of universal lives, and presents Chinese people's pursuit of smoothly integrated world. This is just what we need now.The full dissertation is divided into four parts.The first part is the connotations of Chinese ancient concept on "the Beauty of Circle" and the history of its birth and development. In the fields of art, its connotations present the harmony of forms, the mobility of Qi and Rhyme, and the thickness of artistic world. As to its history, its sprouting stage is before the North and South Dynasties. Chinese ancient people had the first consciousness of "Circle" from their understanding of the world. Its developing stage is the North and South Dynasties. People began to study it from the angle of literary art. Its mature stage is from Tang and Song Dynasties to Ming and Qing Dynasties. More and more literati discussed it, and its range was expanded to poem and Ci, painting, calligraphy, music, and so on.The second part is the presentation of Chinese ancient aesthetic viewpoints of Circle in traditional art. Its fields involve poem, Ci, prose, fiction, music, dance, traditional opera, calligraphy and painting. It expounds systematically that Chinese ancient people paid much attention to "the Beauty of Circle" from different fields, and regarded "Circle" as one of the important aesthetic standards.The third part is the philosophical and cultural basis of traditional aesthetic viewpoints of Circle. First of all, The Book of Changes has an important effect on its formation and development. What's more, some traditional cultural viewpoints of Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism also have close relation to its development.The last part summarizes the contemporary meaning of Chinese traditional aesthetic viewpoints of Circle. "Circle" is not just one category in the research of ancient aesthetics. It still has great value of research until today. The aesthetic viewpoints of Circle are closely linked to traditional circular thinking-mode, outlook onthe world, time and space, reveal the movable and lively spirit of Chinese artistic life and Chinese people's ideal pursuit of the world of harmony, fineness and perfection. As far as the trend of the research of literary theories and aesthetics is concerned, the pursuit of "Circle" is tallied with the direction of blend and permeation of contemporary ways of research. In a word, entering a world of rising and developing aesthetic circle is the grand target of our art.
