This article analyses the realistic artistic features of the neo-realism novels by comparing two pieces of this kind: one with the story happened during the 20s and 30s in the 20 century, another happened during the 50s and 60s.Neo-realism, which appeared in the literary field during the end of the 80s, attracted wide attention at the very beginning with its unique realistic features. It has quite different writing styles compared with the realistic novels before.Realistic novels in the 20s and 30s, with LuXun as the representative writer, are featured with strong social responsibility and cultural criticism. Most of them aimed at "helping the people help themselves" by revealing the national shortcomings and the spiritual burdens of the people. The backwardness and blindness in these novels are really despairs to the readers. Although Neo-realism novels also reveal the dark side of the social life, such as political scandals and human vulnerabilities, their writers seldom add personal judgment in their works. On the contrary, with a calm tone, they reveal the roses and sunshine of life by depicting the optimism of their common characters.During the 50s and 60s, realist novels are marked with unique political affairs. The main purpose of literary works aimed at reflecting "revolutionary history and major reforms in life". Novels depicting personal feelings and daily lives are condemned. On the other hand, perfect heroic figures are writers' favorite choices. Neo-realism novels are quite the opposite. First, they focus on the plain life of common people; second, they aim at reflecting the feelings and lives of some "small figures"---the humble people living in the understratum of the society, true, unvarnished, though not elegant and lofty. So Neo-realism novels, which reflect the reality and essence of realistic lives, have unique values and meaning, and embody the writers' humanistic concern for the society they are living in.
