The thesis studies how the relationship between imperial power and primeministerial power was changing during the period from 1234 to 1264, which wasduring the reign of Emperor Song Lizong. During the first stage of the reign byhimself (1234—1247), Emperor Song Lizong appointed prime ministers in his ownwill and got rid of the control of the powerful Prime minister Shi Miyuan, who died in1233.In the next stage(1247—1258), Emperor Song Lizong neglected the advice ofenforcing the influence of the prime ministers, monopolized the power and trustedeunuchs and relatives around him. This situation made the way for Jia Sidao, arelative of Song Lizong, to be the next powerful minister. In the last stage(1258—1264), Song Lizong empowered those minions to appointand remove prime ministers in his later time, and hardly took ministers'ability ofdealing with government affairs into account. As a result, Jia Sidao actuallypredominated the supreme power of empire. From then on , Jia was not only a primeminister, but also a dictator. To great degree, the autarchy of Song Lizong gave birthto the powerful minister Jia Sidao.
