It is deemed that the book Qing Ni Lian Hua Ji, which was compiledby Mei Dingzuo in late Ming Dynasty, contains lots of passages aboutprostitute collected from history records, notes, and especially from theclassics novels, can be regarded as a collection of prostitute storiesand also an anthology of classic novels focused on prostitute. This bookis very helpful in studying the ancient Chinese prostitute history,brothel culture, and the novels of this kind.This thesis studies the book with a combined method of exploration withdiscussion. The thesis can be divided into four parts. The first part,the exploration of the contents of Qing Ni Lian Hua Ji, gives a fullresearch to the source, compiling and adaptation of the 216 passages, andconfirms the passages written by Mei Dingzuo himself. The second part,the compiling of Qing Ni Lian Hua Ji and the society of medium and lateMing Dynasty, studies the objective reasons for the creation of this bookfrom three aspects: the development of commodity economy in medium andlate Ming Dynasty and the prosperity of prostitute, the atmosphere ofthought and culture and the fashion of literati in medium and late Mingdynasty, and the literary world of medium and late Ming Dynasty and theMei Dingzuo's compiling of Qing Ni Lian Hua Ji. The third part, the brothelculture revealed in Qing Ni Lian Hua Ji, introduces the description ofprostitute livings and revelation of brothel cultures of the pastdynasties by analyzing the passages in the book.
