The piano cycle Kreisleriana Op.16 is one of the most remarkable works in themature period of Robert Schumann's piano composition. The title of this work showsSchumann's intend on the integration of musical meaning and literary thinking, andthe varied and vivid musical mood reflects his aspiration to express himself.Schumann believed that music was a kind of translated poetry, so to describe thepoetical fantasy and colorful mood became the purport of the whole work, and thengive it very particular artistic features. At same time, although Schumann was nottrying to emphasis superb performance technique in his music with intensive attention,his poetic sentiment and fantasy needs reasonable expression of the performerespecially.This thesis intends to analyze and probe into the literary connotation, the artisticfeatures (in the structure, music genre, and texture) and the performance ofKreisleriana, which makes important enlightenment for us to understand and expressthis work, as well as Schumann's other piano works.
