This thesis is about the Prefaces of Classic of Songs. Regards of the time and writer of Prefaces of classic of songs is still under discussion after thousands years, I think study on this question must not only think of complicated situation of Pre-Ch'in's book was compiled and coming down but think of the influences of society, culture and politic backgrounds which it is from. So, I compare the Prefaces and Pre- Ch'in's information about the Classic of Songs systemically and comprehensively in order to explain who and when the Prefaces write down externally. My study on this question is going on by following two chapters and one remaining discussion. Chapter 1 is studying the status in quo of the question lengthways in order to hold it wholly and find out the right opinions and shortcoming of former study. Chapter 2 is studying the relation of the Prefaces and the former opinions. I classify the Prefaces after analyzing the relation of it and former opinions as such four kinds: some prefaces joining with the formers, different with the formers, no formers and under question. My emphasis is the first kind. I also classify this kind into four further kinds: some prefaces joining with Pre-Chin's rite using, with Pre-Chin's Classic interpret, with Pre-Chin's talk using and with discuss using. So I think those prefaces were inherited from former times. Their interpreting method is about song's using or by history. Their character is some prefaces are from former opinions which are accepted by most scholars or some prefaces have been changed which talk about something heavily, complicatedly and incoherently. So, I think the Prefaces is formed by Zhou Dynasty's music officers, Spring and Autumn's Shi, Warring States' Hundreds Schools and Ch'in and Han's scholars from Pre-Chin to Han Dynasty. In the remaining discussion chapter, I think some judgments about the preface from Han Dynasty until now have some shortcomings just because those scholars ignoring the complicated situation we discussing. I try my best to study this question but have some other question still remaining, for example, some prefaces under question and some others different with the former opinions, adding and losing of meaning of songs after Han Dynasty's Mao Gong and the last time which the Prefaces was compiled.
