The great book “Shuo Wen Jie Zi” is the foundation of The Chinese Paleography written by Mr. Xushen from Han dynasty. Ever since then, it has been the foundational research material in all fields of Chinese Paleography, including the glyph, sound, meanings, etc. As the most accurate reference of Xushen’s points of view, the preface of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi” contains abundant basic knowledge of Chinese Paleography, recording valuable literatures such as “Cangjie”, “Aili” and so on. Meanwhile, it also particularly describes Mr. Xu’s insight to the development of Chinese characters. Although scholars of all through the ages has achieved remarkable results from “Shuo When Jie Zi”, yet there is no such a reference completely focused on the other book the preface of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi”.This press is devided into four chapters:Chapter one is the introduction of the whole press. In this chapter, the writer tells the research status of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi” and the reason why scholars should study further on the preface of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi”. There is also explanation of structural semantics and Hermeneutic methods that the writer employed after.Chapter Two contains the main content of the preface of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi ” and its annotation in history. It details the content of the book and lists the research status of scholars in each generation according to the time quantum.Chapter Three is the collection of the interpretations. As the main chapter of the press, it bases on the materials that Duan Yucai didn’t have and compares the criticism of “Duan Zhu”.Chapter Four is the epilogue, which summarizes the writer’s understanding and harvest during the study of the preface of “Shuo Wen Jie Zi”. There are also some new opinions against the questions of this book.
