What is essentialism? There are different philosophical standpoints in the western philosophers. Among them, Aristotle and Kripke held essentialism, but Popper and Quine advocated anti-essentialism. From their standpoints, we can find it affects directly their views on epistemology, metaphysics, logic and so on. Because the problem of essentialism affects the views on modal logic and logic necessity, in the paper, I simply intend to comment on its influence linked with philosophy and logic. This paper can be divided into three parts. The first part introduces the background of essentialism. It especially illuminates Aristotle's viewpoints. The second part illustrates the influence of essentialism on modal logic and the relation to logic necessity. Then gives some brief commentary. The third part expounds the objections and arguments to essentialism and logic necessity. In the last part, the paper shows that essentialism and logic necessity should be looked as the ladder of knowledge, not be objected and argued in ontology.
