The debate about Essentialism has continued for thousands of years and even hasbecome the focus of the Modal Logic in the history of philosophy, especially after the20th century. This thesis first mainly study the historical background of the emerging of NewEssentialism with Kripke as its representative—Aristotle's Classical Essentialismtheory and its form of expression in the Modal Logic Philosophy. It emphasizes theillustration of Aristotle's Four-Predicate theory and deeply analyses Aristotle'sEssentialism of individual objects. And then the thesis refutes Quine'sAnti-essentialism based on his Empiricism stand. Then the thesis introduces the New Essentialism with Kripke as therepresentative. It clearly points out that the most outstanding contribution by Kripke isthat he introduced possible world theory to the research field as a theoretical tool andput forward a complete theory of Modern Essentialism, first, possible world semantics;second, expositions of Contingent a priori proposition and necessary a posteriorproposition; third, causal-historical theory; Fourth, nature kinds and IndividualEssentialism. Putnam supports Kripke's Essentialism by putting forward thetheoretical model of Twin Earth. Finally, the last part of the paper presents the author's own idea. Both classicalessentialism and modern essentialism regard essentialism as attribute of object. Thetwo kinds of essentialism should be thought from a logical point of view. As itsinternal structure, it should be researched from the perspective of social practice fornatural kinds and non-natural kinds. With regard to the understanding of the origin ofthe individual, first, research it from an ontological perspective; second, think overindividual essentialism from the perspective of Epistemology and emphasizes theimportance of social practice.
